Jassa is set to star in the world premiere of Skin A Cat at the VAULT Festival 2016. The play runs 27th - 31st Jan, 9pm with a 4pm matinee on Sat 30th.
Written by Isley Lynn and directed by Blythe Stewart, Skin A Cat follows Alana on an awkward sexual odyssey with a kaleidoscope of off-kilter characters: from getting her first period at nine years old and freaking out her frantic mother, to watching bad porn at a house party with her best friend’s boyfriend, to a painful examination by an overly cheery gynaecologist – all in the pursuit of losing her virginity and finally becoming a woman, whatever that means…
"When I first received the script I intended to read ten pages before bed. I ended up finishing it. I play all the male characters that Alana comes into contact with. It's a brilliant, hilarious and earnest exploration of how sex is defined, challenging my perceptions of womanhood and bringing the word vaginismus into my vocabulary." - Jassa
Lydia Larson plays Alana, with all other female characters performed by Jessica Clark.
Skin A Cat’s bracingly honest exploration of sexual awakening is the first collaboration between Isley Lynn and director Blythe Stewart. Described as ‘an alternative coming of age story for the porn-informed generation’, the production blurs the distinctions of traditional storytelling to provide a compelling, yet often humorous exploration of a person challenging their own taboos.
"Told through the experience and imagination of strong-willed, spirited Alana, Skin A Cat asks us what we are willing to do to make change happen. The play connects to a diverse and eclectic community and we believe the production will thrive with an audience whose taste and capacity for new theatre is as daring as it is sophisticated." - Blythe Stewart (on her vision)
Skin A Cat is produced by Essee Productions and Theatre In Heights.
